两岸大学生首次联手参赛的故事

11月12日19时，台湾淡江大学的师生经过10多个小时旅程抵达天津友谊宾馆。刚进入酒店大堂，他们便被记者团团围住。之所以如此受到关注，是因为此次他们的两件参赛作品“MyChannel虚拟电视台”和“桌面机器人辅助多模即时交流平台”是“挑战杯”举办以来，首次由两岸大学生合作完成的项目。

　　一次交流引发的合作

　　“去年年初，我们就产生了虚拟电视台的作品创意，当时只是作为大四学生的毕业论文题目。由于南开大学一直是我们很好的合作伙伴，于是我们决定让两校的学生合作完成这个项目。”淡江大学资讯管理学系系主任萧瑞祥介绍说，“后来我们得知今年的‘挑战杯’恰好在南开举办，于是就有了合作参赛的想法。”

　　今年8月，萧瑞祥利用暑期，带着淡江大学的6名参赛队员到南开大学进行了两个星期的访问。每天都一起在实验室、会议室和餐厅，两岸大学生建立起了深厚的友谊。

　　淡水大学咨讯管理学系大四学生王明仁是“MyChannel虚拟电视台”项目的主要成员之一。当他们把这个想法介绍给南开大学软件学院的学生后，立刻引起了一些学生的兴趣。南开大学软件工程专业的大四学生陈一九和刘金鑫加入到这个项目中。

　　“随着web3.0和网络视频技术的发展，互联网从注重个性张扬转向更加重视社群的概念，也就是有一种由自我到团结到融合的趋势。”陈一九说，当时大家感觉这个项目比较有前景，于是通过沟通想法，很快开始分头实施项目计划。

　　虽然相隔两地，大家通过MSN进行交流也非常方便。经过几个月的忙碌，终于大功告成。

　　两岸学子创新各有所长

　　“台湾大学生很有创意，总会产生新的想法，但操作能力较弱，内地大学生基本功很扎实，可以很快将创意变成现实。”在交流过程中，萧瑞祥发现两岸大学生的思维方式和做事方法有很多不同之处。

　　淡江大学学生蔡震天对南开大学学生的动手能力和钻研精神印象非常深刻。上次到南开交流时，每天早上去实验室，他们就看到南开的同学已经在里面工作，等晚上他们走时，南开的学生还在里面。“感觉他们真的是一钻进去，就会忘记时间和其他的琐事。这种认真的态度很值得我们学习。”

　　王明仁也很赞同蔡震天的看法。8月在南开交流期间，他看到有两名大二学生，半个月就能把一个类似QQ的程序写出来。“如果换成我来写，估计得半年吧。”王明仁说，在台湾，要读到研究生，编程能力才能达到那样的程度。

　　“他们先提出想法，具体怎么做时我们可能做得比较快。他们再提出一些怎么使播放器更人性化、怎么使画面更生动这样的修改意见。”刘金鑫对台湾大学生灵活开阔的思路和多元的表达方式感触很深，比如台湾学生在介绍他们项目概念的时候，团队成员会分别扮演各种角色，通过一个小短剧的方式表现出来，“我感觉台湾的文化中有很多‘秀’的方式。”

　　寻找更多的合作是我们的梦想

　　“世界是平的，只要沟通就没有什么事是不可能的。”刘金鑫认为，尽管两岸青年为海峡相隔，好像都蒙着一层神秘的面纱，可一旦实际接触，就会发现对方和自己是那么相像，有那么多共同的语言和爱好。

　　陈一九说起8月与淡水大学学生交流的情形，“接他们从机场回来，我们聊了一路。大家有很多共同话题，像就业、家庭，尤其是宿舍生活。大家都爱唱卡拉OK、爱听周杰伦的歌、爱吃烧烤。当谈起当时热播的电影《不能说的秘密》时，淡水大学的学生还说女主角桂纶镁是他们的师姐呢！”

　　两岸学子在合作中不仅结为朋友，而且每个人都感到收获了很多。

　　淡江大学学生张哲铭说这次合作他体会到了团队的力量。“这种合作不仅可以把自己不懂的技术练得更扎实一点，还使我在考虑问题的思路方式上有很大的拓展。”刘金鑫说，他现在也学会了如何在一个轻松的氛围里展示出自己想表达的东西，也许在毕业设计时他就会拍个短片来展示作品的思想。

　　“上一次在复旦参加第九届‘挑战杯’，我们只带来些论文进行交流，这次可以算是第一次正式参赛，也是两岸学生的首次合作。”萧瑞祥老师说，“我们希望通过这次大赛拓展合作面，不仅是南开大学，还有更多的大陆高校，都是我们想要合作的对象，这是我们的梦想。”本报天津11月15日电

More floods threaten south China

The floods have struck at China's industrial heartland

Dykes and embankments are being reinforced in southern China amid some of the worst storms in decades.

At least 63 people have already died in nine provinces in the south - China's industrial heartland - this month, said the civil affairs ministry.

It said 1.66 million people had been evacuated from the hardest-hit areas over the past 10 days.

Up to 70,000 of those being evacuated are from Wenchuan county in Sichuan - the epicentre of May's deadly quake.

Crops submerged

Flooding from the recent heavy rain has destroyed tens of thousands of homes and submerged swathes of farmland, said the civil affairs ministry.

The ministry is quoted as saying the floods are the worst in decades, and puts economic losses so far at 14.5bn yuan ($2.1bn).

High tides and flood water meant the Xijiang River rose by metres

Soldiers have been deployed to reinforce the banks of rivers across the south.

Rivers in the country's prosperous Pearl River delta are suffering "not only the biggest-volume floods in over 50 years but simultaneously also the highest tides in over 10 years", said a report by the water resources office in Guangdong province, according to Reuters news agency.

"The water came up to here," said one 64-year-old farmer, pointing to a spot on a river embankment three or four metres (10-12 feet) above the level of a river in Guangdong.

"It washed away all my cabbages," he told Reuters.

In neighbouring Guangxi province, water levels on the Xijiang River are also said to be several metres above maximum safe levels.

Authorities say that in total this summer season, floods may have claimed up to 200 lives.

Even so, they remain less deadly than floods in recent years - such as in 1998, when more than 4,000 people reportedly died.

Inflation fears

The National Meteorological Centre has forecast more downpours over the next two days in nine provinces - including already hard-hit Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan and Jiangxi.

But the floods are not confined to the south - authorities have also expressed concern that the Yellow River, the country's second biggest, could also burst.

That brings the risk of flooding to the central or northern provinces of Shanxi, Shaanxi, Henan and Shandong.

The destruction of crops risks inflationary price spikes in local food markets, and inspectors have been ordered to clamp down on unacceptably high price hikes, reported Associated Press.

China had already been suffering high inflation before the heavy rains.

Microsoft Unaware of Reported China Investigation

Microsoft said it is unaware of an investigation into whether the company unfairly dominates China's software market as reported by the country's state media on Wednesday.

"Microsoft is unaware of any investigation but is always willing to work with and cooperate with the Chinese government," said a company spokesman based in Singapore.

A working committee of China's State Intellectual Property Office is investigating whether Microsoft engaged in discriminatory pricing, according to Xinhua Financial News, citing the state-owned Shanghai Securities News. A source told Shanghai Securities News that SIPO may bring an antitrust lawsuit once the country's antimonopoly laws are enacted in August, Xinhua said.

The committee will also look at Microsoft's practice of bundling other software programs within its Windows operating system, the report said.

If accurate, China's probe follows a series of antitrust actions against Microsoft in South Korea, Europe and the U.S.

In 2005, the Korea Fair Trade Commission fined Microsoft 33 billion Korean won (US$32 million). The agency ordered Microsoft to offer two versions of its Windows XP operating system in the country, one without Windows Media Player and Windows Messenger and another with links to Web sites offering rival software. Microsoft dropped its subsequent appeal.

The European Commission fined Microsoft €497 million (US$770 million) in 2004 for breaching antitrust regulations. In that case, Microsoft was ordered to sell a version of its operating system without its Windows Media Player and also detail interoperability information for its Windows workgroup servers.

The Commission started another investigation in January after receiving other complaints against Microsoft. The European Committee for Interoperable Systems, a Brussels-based trade group, lodged a complaint over the interoperability of Windows with other software. Browser maker Opera Software also filed a complaint about Microsoft's inclusion of Internet Explorer with Windows.

In the U.S., the Department of Justice is still keeping tabs on Microsoft six years after a 2002 settlement. Microsoft is still producing technical documentation that will help competitors create more compatible products.

Japanese warship on first postwar China visit

TOKYO - A destroyer sailed out Thursday to make a Japanese warship's first port call in China since World War II as part of a two-way military exchange aimed at improving long-strained ties, Japan's defense ministry said.

The navy vessel with 240 crew members was carrying blankets, medical supplies and other relief goods for survivors of China's deadly May 12 earthquake, a Defense Ministry spokeswoman said.

Any Japanese military presence, however, remains a sensitive issue for many Chinese who still hold bitter feelings about Japan's invasion and occupation of their country in the 1930s and '40s.

The destroyer Sazanami will stay in the southern Chinese navy port of Zhanjiang from June 24 to 28, the ministry spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity, citing departmental policy.

"Our China visit will not only help us build trust between Japan and China, but also peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region," Rear Adm. Shinichi Tokumaru said in a televised departure ceremony at the destroyer's home port of Kure in southern Japan. "We'll do our utmost to boost our friendship."

The two countries have recently been making efforts to improve relations.

They announced an agreement Wednesday to jointly develop gas deposits beneath waters in the East China Sea that are claimed by both sides — a breakthrough in one of their major disputes.

In November, the Chinese guided missile destroyer Shenzhen made a port call in Tokyo, the first visit by a Chinese military vessel to Japan since the war.

Japan in late May abandoned a plan to use military planes to deliver relief goods to quake-hit China after Beijing voiced unease about the mission. Many Chinese posted protest messages on the Internet about the plan.

Japan-China relations plunged in the first half of the past decade due to disagreements about wartime history, conflicting territorial claims and other squabbles. The two countries have made progress in defusing those conflicts.

China earthquake region braces for rainstorms

CHENGDU, China - Earthquake-ravaged sections of China's devastated Sichuan province braced Thursday for heavy rainstorms that could trigger new landslides, one day after officials reportedly finished evacuating 110,000 people from the area.

Rain began falling in the evening and thunderstorms were forecast for Friday through Sunday, according to the provincial weather bureau. This month marks the start of the annual rainy season, which routinely leads to flooding in rivers in provinces downstream.

Landslides are a particular concern because the May 12 earthquake caused steep hillsides to shear away and crash into river valleys below. Many slopes remain unstable and are at high risk of being washed away.

Authorities have evacuated 110,000 people since Sunday from mountain districts near the epicenter of the magnitude-7.9 quake, which killed nearly 70,000 people and left 5 million homeless, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The government has already ordered many survivors to move several times because of potential danger from damaged homes, aftershocks and possible flooding from "quake lakes" that formed when huge piles of debris blocked rivers.

Conditions in camps in the hard-hit county of Wenchuan were dismal due to overcrowding, said a county government official reached by telephone.

Refugees were living six to a tent, which have about 22 square feet of living space, said the official, who refused to give his name because he was not authorized to speak to journalists.

"The situation is critical," he said.

Wenchuan remains largely inaccessible due to the destruction of roads by mud and rock slides.

Torrential rains have swept much of southern China in the past week, killing at least 63 people, swamping millions of acres of farmland and causing billions of dollars in damage. Low-lying parts of eastern Sichuan have been affected, but there have been no reports of flooding in the quake zone.

This week's heavy rains have submerged farms in the south, but the swollen rivers largely spared the tens of thousands of factories in the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong province — a huge producer of computers, shoes, toys and other products for the global market.

World Bank raises China 2008 growth forecast to 9.8%

BEIJING -- China's economy is weathering the global slowdown better than expected, the World Bank said Thursday as it raised its growth forecast for the country to 9.8 percent from 9.4 percent.

The World Bank cited the country's strong domestic demand and sustained competitiveness in exports as key strengths.

"Amid weaker and uncertain global prospects, China's growth will be supported by strong international competitiveness and a robust domestic economy," David Dollar, the bank's country director for China, told reporters in Beijing.

just two months earlier, the World Bank had lowered its growth estimate for China to 9.4 percent from 9.6 percent on weakening demand for its exports.

The back-and-forth revisions reflect the uncertainties prevailing at a time when the US economic outlook remains murky due to the fallout from the mortgage lending crisis. They also result from a revision in China's own GDP growth estimate for 2007, which was raised by a 0.5 percentage points following the bank's most recent half-yearly report in early April.

"Global growth is on course to slow further and commodity price-driven inflation has become a complicating factor everywhere. These developments imply considerably more international uncertainty and risk," Dollar said.

"The upward revision to our growth forecast largely reflects revised GDP data showing stronger service sector growth," he said.

The World Bank's current forecast is for growth to slow to 9.2 percent in 2009.

China's economic growth had moderated to a more sustainable pace, which in part reflected less buoyant investment, but the country's domestic economy was holding up well, the WB report said.

It said most developing and emerging markets, like China, would outperform high-income countries as they were less directly exposed to the financial turmoil and would see a modest, orderly slowdown.

The Chinese government has set a growth target for this year of 8 percent following last year's sizzling 11.9 percent expansion.

The Washington-based bank said it did not expect the calamitous earthquake that struck southwest and central China last month, killing about 70,000 people, to have a significant impact on the wider, national economy.

However, it noted that reconstruction might actually boost growth in the months ahead.

The bank lauded China's progress in combating inflation, which fell to 7.7 percent in May from 8.5 percent in April. It forecast that the inflation benchmark, the consumer price index, will rise 6 percent for all of 2008.

Pregnant woman rescued in quake delivers baby named 'Love'

Urumqi -- A little over a month ago, Zhang Xiaoyan lay in the rubble of her earthquake-shattered apartment building. Trapped for more than 50 hours, she prayed for the life of her unborn child.

"Even if I didn't make it, I just wanted my baby to survive," she said. "I was holding out hope during the earthquake that this day would come."

That day was Wednesday, when Zhang's daughter was born by Caesarean section in the Urumqi Maternal Care Hospital. Hours later, Zhang said as she reclined next to her newborn baby, a rosy-cheeked infant swaddled in a pink floral blanket.

Zhang's dramatic rescue in the town of Dujiangyan, captured in photos and video footage that made their way around the globe, was a rare bright spot after the May 12 earthquake that ravaged mountainous Sichuan province and killed almost 70,000 people.

Emergency workers trying not to bring down the rest of the pancaked, seven-story building pulled out Zhang, 35. A bulldozer had to raise its scoop 18 feet (6 meters) so workers could lay her in it. As they did, a rescuer raised a thumbs-up to the crowd of neighbors, who cheered and clapped.

The image of the eight-month pregnant Zhang being carried on a stretcher, her stomach protruding from under a blue sweater and pink pants, was played on TV screens and newspapers across China as well as in media abroad. Her 63-year-old mother also was pulled out alive.

"When we were stuck in the debris there, I just held on to the hope that we would share this time we have here now," said Zhang, who remarkably suffered only superficial injuries. "Because we were buried in there, we didn't know if we'd ever get out, and I was just thinking, 'Save my child. Save my child.'"

Zhang named her 7-pound, 4-ounce (3.3-kilogram) girl "Ai," or "Love," in honor of the rescuers and other strangers who have showered her with kindness, gifts and VIP treatment since she was pulled out of the wreckage.

Because Zhang spent 50 hours trapped in the partially collapsed building, doctors said her unborn child initially suffered some dehydration and low blood sugar. By the time of her birth Wednesday, however, she had improved and doctors said she was healthy.

Before Ai was born, Zhang said that if her child was a boy, "I'd like to train him to be a pilot or a rescue worker, because they are the ones that saved us and gave us a second chance at life. If it is a girl baby, I would also want to teach her to be a useful person that helps people in need."

Because of the publicity stemming from her rescue, Zhang became something of a celebrity. She was flown first-class from Sichuan to Urumqi, located in her home region of Xinjiang in China's southwest, and was given a private room in the maternity hospital.

Doctors and nurses, who clearly were moved by Zhang's saga, donated clothing to her and her mother to replace items lost in the quake. The staff also gave gifts for the baby: clothes, a stroller, a tiny bathtub, bottles, shampoo, lotion and wipes. Her room also contained gifts of fruit and a bowl of hard-boiled eggs, dyed red for good luck.

On Wednesday, Zhang was still a bit groggy from the Caesarean section, but she spoke briefly by telephone with her husband, Pan Yuncheng, who remains in a makeshift camp in Dujiangyan. The phone call was set up by a local radio station.

"I want to thank all the people that were helpful. It was very moving," he said in the conversation as his daughter gave out a loud yell over the phone.

"The situation is pressing, and the tasks are daunting," said Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG), when visiting non-competition venues on Monday.

"We need to prepare ourselves for all kinds of situations, put in more effort, and continue to work on the details," he told the Games organizing staff.

With less than eight weeks to the Olympics, which opens on August 8, Beijing has been tightening security, one of the major focuses.

Last Wednesday, China launched a series of national-level anti-terrorist drills, preparing the security forces against chemical attacks, hijacking and other possible contingencies.

Sniffer dogs will be brought into the capital to help detect explosives. Beginning from June, the country's postal service has suspended mailing parcels containing liquids until October 31. The new measure followed a previous liquid ban introduced in April on carry-on baggage in domestic flights.

"Security work is the basis and key to a successful Olympics... and it has come to a critical point as the Games approach," said China's top security official Zhou Yongkang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, on an inspection tour of the safety work for the Olympics on June 1.

Besides security, logistics poses another major challenge for Beijing as it hosts the largest sports event in its history.

在非洲中部地区干旱的大苹原上，有一种体形肥胖臃肿的巨蜂。巨蜂的翅膀非常小，脖子也很粗短。但是这种蜂在非洲大草原上能够连续飞行250公里，飞行高度也是一般的蜂所不能及的。它们非常聪明，平时藏在岩石缝隙或者草丛里，一旦有了食物立即振翅飞起。尤其是当它们发现这一个地区气候开始恶劣，就要面临极度干旱的时候，他们会成群结队地迅速逃离，向着水草丰美的地方飞行。而其它的蜂类就不同了，一旦遇到恶劣的天气，成千上万的蜂往往就束手无策，在顷刻之间就无影无踪了。这种强健的蜂因而被科学家们称为非洲蜂。

但是科学家们对于这种蜂却充满了无数的疑问。因为根据生物学的现论，这种蜂体形肥胖臃肿而翅膀却非常短小，在能够飞行的物种当中，它是飞行条件最差的。如果按照飞行条件，它还不如鸡和鸭鹅优越。尤其在蜂的大家族里，它更是身体条件最差的。而根据物理学的理沦，它的飞行就更是不可思议的事情了。因为根据流体力学，它的身体和翅膀的比例是根本不能够起飞的!

按照科学家的理论，这种蜂不要说自己起飞，就是我们用力把它扔到天空去，它的翅膀也不可能产生承载肥胖身体的浮力，会立刻掉下来摔死。

可是事实却是恰恰相反的，它不仅仅不用借助我们的力量，它完全依靠自己的力量飞行，而且是飞行的队伍里最为强健，最有耐力，飞行距离最长的物种之一。

科学家们从来也没有遇到过对科学这样残酷的挑战。因为在这个小小的物种面前，所有关于科学的经典理论都不成立。

衍学家们知道了这个故事之后，告诉严谨的生物学家和物理学家说，没有什么奇异的秘密，它们天资低劣，但是它们必须生存，而且只有学会长途飞行的本领，才能够在气候恶劣的非洲大草原生存。而那些条件稍微好些的物种就不同了，它们天资好些，它们会飞行，它们也就不再刻苦练习求生的本领了。

道理很简单，没有什么是不可能的。之所以不可能，是因为你没有被置之死地。所有的经验也不是一成不变的，只要你有无比的信心和勇气，一切都是可能的。

The "NoViewOnDrive" value uses a 32-bit bitmask to define local and network drive access for each logical drive in the computer. The lower 26 bits of the 32-bit word correspond to drive letters A through Z. Drives are visible when set to 0 and hidden when set to 1.

If your not happy working in Hex, add these decimal numbers to hide the drive(s):

A: 1, B: 2, C: 4, D: 8, E: 16, F: 32, G: 64, H: 128, I: 256, J: 512, K: 1024, L: 2048, M: 4096, N: 8192, O: 16384, P: 32768, Q: 65536, R: 131072, S: 262144, T: 524288, U: 1048576, V: 2097152, W: 4194304, X: 8388608, Y: 16777216, Z: 33554432, ALL: 67108863

For example to hide drive A and drive D, you would add 1 (A) + 8 (D) which means the value should be set to "9".

To disable all the drives set the value to "67108863".

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.
